No direct train runs from Dundee to Pitlochry, so the way to go is ScotRail to Perth and a change there. The first leg takes 24 minutes with one stop, and the second half an hour with two. A typical journey takes about 1h15, and the best connection on the weekday timetable did it in 58 minutes.
The two rides add up to 54 minutes, which leaves a typical wait at Perth of a little over twenty minutes. On the tightest connection it was about four. Trains north from Perth to Pitlochry are sometimes almost two hours apart, so if a late-running train from Dundee misses one of those short connections, the four-minute change can become a wait of well over an hour.
On the weekday we checked, journeys with a single change at Perth left Dundee at 07:12, 09:15, 10:18, 11:15, 12:15, 14:14, 15:52, 17:07, 18:08 and 19:47. Watch the stretch after the 12:15: the next one on that list is the 14:14, two hours later. Routes with an extra change at Ladybank, or going round by Stirling, also appeared, but both took over two hours and offer nothing the plain Perth change does not.
After the 19:47, the evening options the planner showed mixed in buses. The 22:01 and the 23:49 from Dundee took the train to Perth and a bus from there, about 1h25 in all, and a bus with a change at Perth left Dundee at 21:52 and took around 1h40.
