Inverness to Pitlochry by Train

By Pitlochry Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Every train we found from Inverness to Pitlochry was direct. The trains, run by ScotRail and LNER, make three stops before Pitlochry and take about 1h40 on a typical run, with the quickest at 1h26, so there is no change to plan around. Travellers from Dundee and Aberdeen have to change at Perth and can miss the connection there; coming from Inverness, that risk never arises.

Departures from Inverness

On the weekday timetable there were twelve departures: 05:35, 06:38, 07:55, 08:42, 09:42, 10:50, 12:48, 14:50, 15:44, 17:25, 18:52 and 20:22. The morning is well served, with six trains before eleven o’clock, but around midday the departures found are about two hours apart, either side of the 12:48. For an early arrival, the 05:35 reaches Pitlochry at about 07:14 on a typical run.

Journey times vary more than you might expect for a direct service, from 86 minutes on the quickest train to 99 on a typical one. When two Inverness departures are close together, compare when each reaches Pitlochry rather than simply taking the earlier one.

After the 20:22

The 20:22 is the last train to Pitlochry on the weekday list. After it, the remaining options were buses all the way from Inverness, one at 21:15 and one at 22:45, each taking just under two hours, so the 21:15 bus reaches Pitlochry a little after eleven.
