Glasgow to Pitlochry by Train

By Pitlochry Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Five direct ScotRail trains a day run from Glasgow Queen Street to Pitlochry. On the weekday we checked they left at 07:07, 10:08, 12:07, 15:07 and 19:07, taking about 1h45 with four stops, and the quickest of them did it in 1h33. If one of those five fits your plans, take it.

Filling the gaps

The direct departures found are far apart: three hours from the 07:07 to the 10:08 and four from the 15:07 to the 19:07. Changing at Perth fills them at very little cost. Departures from Glasgow at 08:40, 10:41, 13:40, 16:38, 17:40 and 19:37 took about 1h50 with that change, less than ten minutes more than going direct.

That makes the Perth change the sensible answer for anyone heading north from Glasgow in the late afternoon, when the next direct train found is the 19:07.

A change at Stirling is the next option, from 08:49, 10:18, 13:18, 16:21, 17:19 and 19:22, and it adds roughly twenty minutes to the direct time. The last all-rail departure we found from Glasgow was the 19:37 via Perth, half an hour after the 19:07 direct, which gives an evening start a little slack. After it, the 21:40 and the 23:10 went by train to Perth and bus from there, in just under two hours. Routes that go via Haymarket also showed up on the weekday timetable, but they took more than two and a half hours from Glasgow and only make sense if nothing else fits.

Train or car

By car it is 84 miles on the M80 and A9, about 1h40, which is close to a typical direct train and quicker than any of the routes with a change.

Arriving

It is about five minutes on foot, 357 metres, from the station to Atholl Road, so there is no need for a taxi or bus at the Pitlochry end.
